BlackBerry tablet to be announced next week?

Are we close to finally hearing the first official bits about the BlackBerry tablet? If WSJ [Wall Street Journal] were Filipina fortune-teller Madam Auring, then maybe the announcement could come as early as next week and the availability could be by the 4th quarter of 2010. That’s something to look forward to, Pinoy Techies, especially since the device will wage war against the iPad, the Galaxy Tab, and the Dell Streak, bringing the 4-way fight in the smartphone arena to the tablet space.

According to WSJ‘s sources, RIM insiders said that the so-called BlackPad will be revealed at the company’s developer conference in San Francisco next week.

The tablet is said to have a 7-inch touch screen, 1 or 2 built-in cameras, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

Apparently, the BlackPad won’t be locked to a carrier or data plan and will only be able to access cellular networks via tethering with BlackBerry mobiles.

The most interesting thing we heard, though, is OS-related. RIM has supposedly ditched BlackBerry 6 for a new platform being developed by QNX Software Systems. This we’d like to see.
